Fernando an inspiration on and off the football pitch
Former Rangers captain Fernando Ricksen was an inspiration on and off the field. He was at Ibrox for six trophy-laden years and led by example on the pitch.
And when he was diagnosed with motor neuron disease six years ago, he fought a valiant fight again the condition until his death yesterday.
He launched a charity which raised more than £1m for research into the condition and he urged others to continue to pressure pharmaceutical companies to find a cure, arguing the relatively rare incidence of motor neuron disease lessened its priority with the drug companies.
Finding a cure would be a fitting legacy to a real warrior.
