Festival shows we would be much the poorer without our arts

Editor's Viewpoint

This year's Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queen's has shown the wide range of cultural events on offer in a city and province which has come through some very dark days, when the festival was almost the only light in a gloomy landscape. The quality of performances this year was consistently high, and everyone involved deserves credit for staging such a variety of events.

The festival has underlined yet again that the arts make a significant contribution to any civilized society, including ours, and that it would be a tragedy if they were diminished, or no longer available, including our cherished Ulster Orchestra.
