Girl power

Coleraine teenager Hannah Eastwood is certainly a fabulous ambassador for Northern Ireland and our education system after becoming the first girl to win the prestigious UK Young Scientist of the Year award. She is obviously a very bright young girl having devised a complex system to purify water by removing chromium from it and then allowing the metal to be reclaimed for industry.

But she also enjoys life away from the laboratory, being proficient in sport and music. Science suddenly isn't just the preserve of nerdish bookworms and if her success encourages more young people to take up the subject, that must be good for the future of the Northern Ireland economy.
