Goal-scoring record hero Healy bows out a legend

Editor's Viewpoint

David Healy was unique in Northern Ireland football history, a man who could not help scoring for his country. His total of 36 international goals in 95 appearances is nearly three times as many as the next highest and he scored against the very best teams including a winner against England and an incredible hat-trick against Spain.

He hit a record 13 goals in one European Championship qualifying series.

When Healy was in the team and in his prime, Northern Ireland always felt they had a chance of victory no matter what the opposition.

He has now hung up his boots.

But his goals will be replayed as long as the game is played here and his record may well last as long.
