Golfing prodigy Gemma has the drive to reach the top
Ever since Rory McIlroy appeared on television chipping golf balls into a washing machine, Northern Ireland has been fascinated by golfing prodigies. We produce a remarkable number, given the size of our population.
The latest is 10-year-old Gemma McMeekin, who has won the Wee Wonders British Golf Championships and now qualified for next year's World Championship.
Coming from a sporting family, she has shown great talent to date, but her father is right to remind everyone that hard work is required to reach the top. At least she will never be cited as the next Rory. Instead, she regards Stephanie Meadow as her role model.
