Gone to the dogs

Editor's Viewpoint

Our reputation as a nation of dog lovers takes a bit of a battering when the number of strays and abandoned animals is taken into account. Fortunately they are often given a good home, for a time, in dog pounds, but one of those in Carrickfergus is now about to close and permanent homes for 45 dogs are being sought.

Many people will be moved by our appeal for homes for these animals and we have no doubt that big-hearted dog lovers will rally round. But those who find photographs of homeless puppies appealing must also realise that the dogs will grow up and need more and more attention. A dog becomes an important part of a family and requires care, attention and a lot of time. They were abandoned because previous owners could not provide that. Hopefully their new owners will.
