Good Samaritan's doggy rescue to be applauded

Editor's Viewpoint

If we saw a person in difficulty in the sea any of us would try our best to rescue them by one means or another. But would we do the same for a dog? Well, Shane Mawhinney would - and did. He rowed his boat to pluck a tiny dog out of the water at Portrush harbour after he heard its owner's calls for help.

It may not have been any huge drama in the great scale of things, but for the owner of the little animal it was a lifesaving intervention for which she will be eternally grateful. Shane's reward was the looks of gratitude on the faces of the owner and her young son and that, to him, was worth everything. Like the Good Samaritan, he did not turn away in a time of need.
