Hail the modest hero of Ballycastle rescue drama

Editor's Viewpoint

The sea is an unforgiving playground, enticing but also dangerous.

Three children in Ballycastle discovered how quickly a little messing about on the water could turn into near tragedy as they were swept offshore from the mouth of the river where they were playing.

They were fortunate that a local man came to their aid, wading out into the chilly water to pluck them from the waves. It was lucky that a lifebelt was readily available, but it took courage for the man to go into the sea to help the stranded youngsters.

He doesn't regard his actions as heroic, but he is a hero to the young people.
