Heartening tale of friends reunited after 70 years

Editor's Viewpoint

Life can throw up stranger plots than any fictional drama. A chance name-check on the radio led to two sisters meeting up with a man who had been evacuated to their area of north Antrim during World War Two more than 70 years ago.

The sisters didn't know what happened to the Bargewell family of boys and girls who they had played with on those far-off days until hearing the name again last week. Sam is one of only two of the family still alive and he was able to tell the sisters of some of his history since the 1940s. It is heartening to realise that friendships formed fleetingly all those decades ago have survived and will flourish again.
