How momentous if Queen and Pope were to meet in NI

Editor's Viewpoint

A meeting between Pope Francis and Queen Elizabeth in Northern Ireland next year would mark a neat bookend to the peace process begun with the Good Friday Agreement, 20 years ago. It would also finish the papal journey begun by Pope John Paul II in 1979 when the fear of loyalist violence stopped him from crossing the border.

Any meeting between the Pope and the Queen could be choreographed as a meeting between two Church leaders - and Armagh with its twin cathedrals would be the ideal venue - but its political import could not be denied and it would irrevocably change the mood music in the province.
