If it ain't broke ...

For 25 years, Castleward, on the shores of Strangford Lough, was the setting for a cultural experience seldom found elsewhere in Northern Ireland. The annual opera event at which patrons dressed in formal attire, picnicked and drank champagne on the lawn was hardly populist, but it was popular.

Now its funding has been withdrawn, bringing down the curtain on a unique event. Instead the new Opera Company NI will be charged with bringing opera to a wider audience and developing local talent. That is quite a challenge on a relatively small budget. Castleward Opera worked. Let us hope that the new venture is equally successful.
