James and Elizabeth Wylie - tale of everlasting love

Editor's Viewpoint

Even the most unromantic souls could not fail to be touched by the poignant tale of James and Elizabeth Wylie, who died just hours apart, after being together for 64 years.

They loved and cared for each other throughout those decades, were pillars of their community in Broughshane and were much admired by all who knew them.

Ironically, as her husband's life ebbed away, Elizabeth had chosen what she wanted to wear to his funeral, and then fell ill herself. They spent much of their lives together.

Their's was a traditional and literal 'til death do us part union and an example of what marriage is supposed to be in an age when many treat it either with utter disdain or pay only lip-service to the notion of forsaking all others.
