SDLP man John Dallat, who has died, did not mince his words when he saw injustice or was denouncing violence as a political weapon.

He may have crossed swords with political opponents on many occasions, but they recognised that he was a man of principle and that won him respect across the political divide, as evidenced by the tributes paid to him.

He also fought a long campaign to bring the killer of German teenager Inge Maria Hauser to justice. That was an indication of how he cared about the province and its reputation abroad.

Sadly, like Inge Maria's parents, he has died without seeing justice done.
