Kelly Gallagher's Paralympic gold medal story at turns inspirational and humbling

Editor's Viewpoint

To ski down a mountain at speeds of up to 50mph is daunting for those with perfect eyesight, but Paralympic gold medallist Kelly Gallagher from Bangor can only see the blur of her guide cutting the trail when she is on the slopes. But now the partially sighted girl has joined the list of Northern Ireland sporting heroes who have conquered the world and she may gain more success today.

But we should not be surprised at her success. She showed by gaining four As in her A-levels that her disability is not a barrier to her, rather just an obstacle to be overcome. She is a fantastic ambassador for Northern Ireland, but most of all a credit to herself and her indomitable spirit.

She makes us feel proud and humble in equal measure.
