It is understandable that politicians would be wary of independent scientific and medical experts who challenge their policies regarding how we should tackle the coronavirus pandemic.
However, that is no excuse for experts allegedly being put under pressure not to voice their opinions in the local media.
Just as we would defend the right of the media to free expression, so also should independent experts be allowed to give their opinions.
No pressure, overt or covert, should be imposed on their employers to silence them.
We welcome the Department of Health's assertion that it has not sought to fetter experts and that it supports their role.
