Medics show heart
As our Life cover story today indicates, doctors often get a bad press, both from the media and even their patients. Naturally they feel much of the criticism is unfair. And certainly a group of medical professionals from Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital showed that their caring extends far beyond our shores.
They have helped to reopen a cardiac surgery unit in Nigeria, a country where only 150 open-heart operations have been performed in the past 30 years. Many lives which could have been saved were lost, but now seriously ill patients have been given new hope thanks to the Northern Ireland medical team who not only performed five operations but also gave vital training to staff in the Nigerian facility. If ever the phrase heartfelt thanks was appropriate, then this is that case.
