Richard Erskine has featured prominently in this newspaper twice - once for incredible results in his GCSEs, and today, as his mum tells how a young man who should have had a glittering career as a doctor ended up a drunk, dying under a motorway bridge in Belfast.

Janet Erskine bravely lays bare her son's descent into alcoholism and death as a warning that it could happen to anyone or in any family.

But she also wants to make it clear that, in her opinion, Richard was let down by a system that did not treat his underlying mental health problems, which should have been self-evident. His was a talented life wasted.
