National Trust out of step on Giant's Causeway gift shop

Editor's Viewpoint

Undoubtedly visitors to the Giant's Causeway need baby changing facilities and public toilets. But it is equally evident that there is sufficient land around the National Trust's existing visitor centre to accommodate such facilities. Instead, the Trust has decided in effect to put a long-standing souvenir business on the site out of business.

Tommy McConaghy and his family provide a service that is popular with visitors. He is as much part of the tourism infrastructure as the National Trust, albeit on a smaller scale, and entrepreneurship should be encouraged rather than being challenged and placed in an invidious position between a rock and a hard place.
