NI man's account reveals the reality of bushfires' impact
When a natural disaster occurs, like the vast fires threatening many parts of Australia, the distance can make it seem removed from us.
It takes the story of an eyewitness like that of Ulsterman Brian Cartmill to bring home the gravity of the situation. Originally from Belfast, he has been in Melbourne for 30 years and, as a truck driver, is helping firefighters by transporting vital supplies.
He said: "I saw a wall of smoke and flames that would go from Belfast to Ballynahinch, if not Newcastle, and the sky turning a terrifying colour of red." His courage and that of others is beyond words. Our hearts go out to them all.
