We associate top flight footballers with astronomical wages but that is a recent phenomenon as the story of iconic Northern Ireland star Norman Whiteside proved. He played for one of the biggest clubs in the world, Manchester United, but never earned enough to build up a sizeable pension pot.

But he certainly scored a winner when he decided to auction his footballing memorabilia, with the 60 items fetching more than £250,000 which should guarantee the 55-year-old a comfortable time in later life. The interest in his mementoes from his playing days showed the affection that he is still held in by fans.
