Novel prison art project a boon for family relations
Prison is meant to include rehabilitation as well as retribution, and an innovative arts project at Maghaberry has given inmates an opportunity to work with their children and maintain family contacts at a pivotal time in their lives. Working with professional spray painters, they created a mural in the jail.
The absence from families can be one of the most punishing aspects of prison and can lead to domestic relationships breaking down. Prison is not meant to be a punishment on families, although that obviously is the case, and this project has lessened that feeling of separation and is a creative solution in every sense of the phrase.
