Only games in town

Editor's Viewpoint

While the number of competitors in the World Police and Fire Games may be down on the hoped for total, they stack up impressively. Some 6,700 serving and retired police, fire and prison officers from 67 countries will take part over 10 days. This is the first time the games have been held on these islands. That, alone, is a signal honour for the province.

It is also another opportunity, following the G8 conference, to show the positive side of Northern Ireland and to send visitors away extolling its attractions and our warmth and friendliness. They can be tourism ambassadors for us in their home countries. In the meantime we can witness top sport for free in the biggest event of its kind ever held here. So let's get behind the games and show the world we know how to enjoy ourselves.
