Our growing population of immigrants plays vital role
The growing diversity of the population of Northern Ireland is shown in the latest statistics from the Department of Education.
They reveal that there are more than 15,000 pupils whose grasp of English is so poor they cannot participate fully in the school curriculum. Factor in their parents and other relatives and that amounts to a sizeable number of recently arrived immigrants.
Those who come here contribute significantly to the local economy, including playing vital roles in our health service. There is also a growing need for multilingual teachers, which opens up new opportunities for those arriving from overseas.
