Parents must act to help kids improve state of their teeth

Editor's Viewpoint

Teenagers in Northern Ireland suffer from the highest rates of tooth decay in the UK, but the problems start much earlier with 40% of five-year-olds showing some signs of rotten teeth.

While the British Dental Association is calling for a new oral hygiene strategy to be introduced here - describing the current one as a museum piece - the primary responsibility still lies with parents, not politicians. Too many sweets, too many sugary drinks and lack of proper brushing are the main factors in leaving our young people with unwelcome gap-toothed smiles and mouthfuls of fillings.
