Parents set rotten example regarding their kids' teeth

Editor's Viewpoint

It is shameful that thousands of Northern Ireland children - including babies aged under 12 months - are having operations under general anaesthetic to remove rotten teeth. This is not just an issue about dental care - although how some parents can allow their children's teeth to decay to such a level is beyond most people's comprehension - but about lifestyle and healthier eating.

Giving young children drinks or food high in sugar is one obvious cause of tooth decay and the advice to avoid doing this has been preached long and hard. The habits formed in childhood are hardest to break and these children have been given the worst possible start in life.
