No motorist can be unaware that speeding is a major cause of accidents resulting in deaths.

Yet this is something some drivers appear to pay no heed to in Northern Ireland where speeding offences last year were 20% higher than in 2018, running at a scandalous average rate of 135 a day.

While motorists detected breaking the speed limit by huge amounts on rural roads often make the headlines, it should be noted that almost half of all offences involve driving at more than 30mph in built-up areas. Doing 35mph may seem like a minor offence but it is also a killer speed. Heavier penalties for speeding is the greatest deterrent.
