Rooney's own goal

If Wayne Rooney was engaged in virtually any other sport than Premiership football he would receive a much tougher penalty than a two-match ban. Bad behaviour remains a hallmark of the game at this top level. Referees find themselves abused by managers and players alike. Histrionics on the pitch, as evidenced by Rooney, are all too commonplace. The "Respect" campaign is an essential step in the right direction for all players and officials. As a result, the local game is showing encouraging signs of reducing sectarian cat-calling and crowd misbehaviour. However, if the great players - the role models for so many young people - do not show respect, the beautiful game is besmirched. Rooney escaped lightly.
