Sammy Jo's Ascot masterclass evidence of a star in the making

Editor's Viewpoint

The young Templepatrick girl Sammy Jo Bell has had remarkable success at Ascot, winning the Silver Saddle for the top jockey.

She was the leading rider in the Ascot Shergar Cup, and she also led the Girls' Team to a surprise victory. Sammy Jo took the most of her opportunity in deputising for the injured Cathy Gannon, and she has consolidated her reputation as one of the most exciting young riders of the moment.

She is having her best season so far, with 19 wins. She has a long way to go before emulating AP McCoy of course - the Moneyglass man retiring with a total of 4,348 wins - but she certainly has made a great impression, and everyone here wishes her well in her demanding and exciting career.
