Science on show

The ingenuity of the pupils from 16 Northern Ireland schools who have made it through to the finals of the BT Young Scientist exhibition in Dublin is staggering, with inventions ranging from a wireless plant monitor to a device to improve road safety. It is exactly those sorts of enquiring, inventive and analytical minds that we need in the next generation of entrepreneurs who will help rebuild the Northern Ireland economy.

Science is an often neglected subject today, but it offers the hope of high-value occupations in the future and we must hope that the young people showing their exhibits this week will take their interests further in third-level education and eventually into the workplace.
