Sensible advice to people who suffer loss of hearing

Editor's Viewpoint

For Davy Jones the loss of hearing in middle age has been a traumatic experience. It meant that he could no longer enjoy music, one of the great loves of his life, but even worse he has never heard the voices of three of his grandchildren.

Imagine never hearing a child tell you that they love you or that they want a cuddle. Deafness is also very isolating. As Mr Jones reveals he dislikes entering a crowded room where people are chatting to each other and he has no idea what the conversations are about.

His sensible advice to any deaf person is to tell those they meet that they have hearing problems which helps avoid embarrassment.
