Shipyard workers deserve their light at end of tunnel
The workers at Harland & Wolff in Belfast will be giving themselves a well-deserved pat on the back this morning after the company, which is in administration, has been thrown a lifeline. For weeks the workers have staged a sit-out at the east Belfast site in a bid to find a new buyer for the company.
Now a Royal Navy order for five frigates could prove its salvation. H&W is associated with the company that is the preferred bidder for the work and it could benefit from fabrication orders. A new owner has yet to be found, but there is now hope where none existed before thanks to the determination of men to keep alive the city's shipbuilding legacy.
