Shocking loss of Derry star is difficult to comprehend

Editor's Viewpoint

The sudden death of Derry City footballer Ryan McBride is all the more shocking because of his relatively high sporting profile. We should not be mourning a young man in the prime of his playing career. Of course our greatest sympathies must go to his father and three sisters. Their loss is the greatest and their grief will be the longest lasting.

But Ryan was admired much further afield than his native city as the messages of condolences testify. He not only maximised his footballing skills but was a genuine leader of the team, much respected by those at all levels within the club as well as the supporters. A true sportsman gone too soon.
