Sir Van is still a son grieving loss of his precious mother

Editor's Viewpoint

He may be rich, famous and an idol to legions of fans, but today singer Sir Van Morrison is grieving the passing of his beloved mother, Violet, just like any other son.

His status can insulate him from many things, but death comes to everyone's door, and it matters not that the deceased lived nine decades and more - the sense of loss is always acute.

Mrs Morrison had a big influence on her son and he frequently returned to Belfast to visit her. She was a woman full of life, and her singing on a Belfast stage just a few years ago showed she had lost little of her vigour. Perhaps Sir Van may pay his own tribute to her in song at some future date.
