St Patrick's celebration now a true cross-community event

Editor's Viewpoint

There were isolated instances of trouble in Belfast during the St Patrick's Day celebrations but the hooligans responsible should not be allowed to tarnish the sterling work of the organisers who have attempted with considerable success to make the event truly cross-community.

It was the only blemish on a day which saw 160 iconic landmarks around the globe turned green in an Irish tourism marketing project.

The religious significance of the day was recalled by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, who followed in the footsteps of St Patrick from Saul to Downpatrick to celebrate the saint's missionary zeal.
