Statement coffins can give the departed the last laugh

Editor's Viewpoint

Death is often said to be the great leveller, but it seems that some of us want to retain our individuality even after life has ended.

Until recently, coffins were fairly standard in design but now the casket makers are being asked to personalise them in the deceased's favourite football or GAA team colours, bearing an image of an iconic singer like Elvis, or even pictures of much-loved scenery.

Just what more traditional clergy make of this trend is uncertain, but it appears that, as they set out on their final journey, some people are not quite laughing in the face of death, but are determined to raise a chuckle on a very grave occasion.
