Taunts and jibes aimed at ill woman a new low for bigots

Editor's Viewpoint

Losing your hair as a result of chemotherapy is one of the most distressing side effects of cancer treatment, especially for women.

It takes a lot of courage to venture out in public with a completely bald head and the Londonderry grandmother who took that step on Sunday, only to be subjected to taunts and sectarian jibes, was reduced to tears.

There is a sectarian undertone to many things in Northern Ireland, but to poke fun at a woman suffering from incurable cancer shows that bigots will sink to the lowest imaginable level.

Fortunately, the vast majority will condemn that behaviour and send good wishes.
