The bond between dog and owner is a very special one
It is too simple to call a dog a pet. Tortoises, fish or even the ever-aloof cats are pets. Dogs should be more accurately described as companions. Even working dogs share the species desire to please their owners.
Our writer's emotive account of the life and death of her beloved Labrador summed up that bond between dog and its owner perfectly. It was there in good times and bad, somehow sensing when its owner needed a cuddle.
It could raise spirits with its madcap antics or just by sitting, head cocked, seemingly ready to listen and offer comfort just by its presence. Little wonder that our writer wanted another dog to recapture that special bond.
