The eyes have it
It is astonishing how lives can be transformed by the slightest incident. American student, brown-eyed Courtney Hardy, had a light-bulb moment during a biology class when she realised she may not be the natural daughter of her blue-eyed parents. They admitted she was adopted and years later she discovered her real parents, including her Belfast father.
There is a natural inclination in all of us to discover our heritage as witnessed by the upsurge in genealogy searches and programmes like Who Do You Think You Are. Sometimes the search to find parents or other relatives can end in tears but in Courtney's case she has been welcomed with open arms by her biological parents.
Yet, she still calls her adopted parents mum and dad – for they are the people who made sacrifices throughout her life and made her the woman she is today.
This is a story where everyone is a winner.
