The hero next door

He may have missed the cut when the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service was last recruiting, but Belfast man Paul Lambe showed that he is made of the right stuff when he helped to rescue a baby from a burning home in Newtownabbey early yesterday.

His heroic response to a neighbour's cry for help in the middle of the night and catching the baby when it was dropped from an upstairs window displayed the sort of selflessness which would be an asset to any emergency service.

Since firemen were present at the scene when Paul sprang into action, perhaps they will give him a good reference if he ever applies again.
