Time legendary Celtic boss Maley was honoured in Newry
Celtic manager and Carnlough man Brendan Rodgers, in guiding the team to a new unbeaten domestic record of 63 games last month (it now stands at 68), surpassed the feat set by the club 100 years ago when it was led by another Ulsterman, Willie Maley, and has resurrected a campaign to honour him.
Maley led Celtic for 43 years, and a Newry historian wants the city where he was born to erect a statue in his memory. He fears the fact that Maley's father was a British soldier may have put off some die-hard fans. Yet his contribution to the Hoops deserves recognition and the local council should seriously consider the proposal.
