Time to celebrate the vital role played by our midwives
Midwifery is a profession which has seen enormous changes in the past 100 years since it became regulated in Northern Ireland. It is only a couple of generations ago since many, if not most, births were at home overseen by the community midwife. Now there are hi-tech instruments and improved drugs to help mums at the end of their labour.
But still the midwife plays a vital role, not only at the birthing stage but also during the pregnancy. They become a trusted professional to mothers-to-be, sharing in the joy of new life and consoling on those rare occasions when things go wrong. They deserve a great year of celebration.
