Timeless appeal of Lavery's art still remains to this day

Editor's Viewpoint

Sir John Lavery may have come from poor circumstances - orphaned and brought up by relatives - but such was his talent as an artist that it now takes some of the richest in the land to afford one of his paintings. His latest work to go to auction fetched nearly £900,000, double the expected price.

Although art prices in general have fallen in recent years, the appeal of the truly great works remains and there is no doubt that Lavery was one of the finest, if not the finest, artist to come from Northern Ireland. It might be a good idea to root around in the attic on the off chance that a forgotten masterpiece was stashed away there.
