Tragedy behind the death of radio favourite Geordie

Editor's Viewpoint

Geordie Tuft was a character known to thousands of Radio Ulster listeners through his regular contributions to the Gerry Anderson show. But few would have realised that he lived alone in straitened circumstances, refusing all offers of help except from a caring neighbour, and he was accident prone. Tragically he died in a fire at his home.

Geordie, like so many other single men living alone, was a proud independent man, seeing offers of help as fussing. But as good neighbours, like Geordie's, we should do our best to look in on these elderly and vulnerable men even if they won't let us look after them.
