Transfers have become a game of fantasy football
The sums of money avalanching around Premier League football in England are mind-boggling. The 20 clubs involved spent a record £835m on transfer deals in the hope of buying success.
Nowhere was this more apparent than at Manchester United, where player deals reached an astonishing £149m.
These are figures almost beyond the comprehension of most of us. To put it in perspective, one of the players signed on a loan deal by United, Radamel Falcao, is reportedly on wages which equate to £33 a minute.
As one Twitter wag put it, if he dropped a £20 note, by the time he bent down to pick it up he would have earned the same amount.
The fans will be hoping that he scores as well on the field as he does in the salary stakes.
