Use every trick in the book when it comes to reading
A new survey suggests that many children in Northern Ireland are not reading books which are challenging enough for their age, and this is particularly acute among teenagers.
This was the pattern throughout the UK, and the trend is alarming amid growing concern about the impact of social media and "text speak".
The education authorities are planning to counteract this, but it cannot be left to schools alone. All parents have a key role in reading with younger people, and in encouraging them to choose challenging material themselves for their reading at every stage of their later life.
