We all mourn with McGuigan family after death of Danika

Editor's Viewpoint

Barry McGuigan and his family will always have a special place in the hearts of very many people in Northern Ireland. They remember a talented fighter who united fans not only in Ulster, but throughout Ireland.

News that his only daughter Danika has died far too young from cancer came like a hammer blow out of the blue as far as the public were concerned.

They remembered how she bravely fought the disease as an 11-year-old.

Danika made a remarkable and determined recovery and went on to become a respected actress. But ultimately the cancer returned with devastating results and the 33-year-old died on Tuesday morning.

After Danika's recovery more than 20 years ago, Barry became a patron of Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood (CLIC) and took part in many charity fundraising events. It was typical of the man and his family to seek to help others less fortunate than themselves.

To lose any relative at any age is heartbreaking, but the grief is compounded for parents when it is their child who dies. Sadly, the McGuigan family are now plunged into that ocean of tears and rightly want to grieve in private.

Our sincere condolences go out to Barry, wife Sandra and sons Shane, Blane and Jake.
