We need to be vigilant about the problem of slavery in Northern Ireland
Today marks the start of Anti-Slavery Week in the United Kingdom, and people here might think initially that slavery is not our problem.
In fact it is. Figures released by the National Crime Agency reveal that there are more than 300 police operations targeting slavery in the UK, and that 21 of these are being led by the PSNI. The police have asked people to be aware of tell-tale signs such as overcrowding in a house or flat, or someone who has no cash or is unsure of their home address, or has unexplained injuries.
People here should educate themselves about the signs of possible slavery and report anything suspicious to the police.
