Why today's sports stars need super fans like Gary

Editor's Viewpoint

Some men really are sports mad but Gary Shufflebottom took the role of fan to new levels at the weekend, managing to take in three events – an Irish League football match, Carl Frampton's boxing triumph and Northern Ireland's football win in Budapest.

It may have been extreme supporting but it points up that sports stars are nothing without fans.

Those who earn big wages from their sporting activities must remember that it is people like Gary who ultimately foot the bill. But Gary, having seen all his favourites win, probably feels his madcap dash from Larne to Hungary via Belfast was well worth it.
