The two women whose sign language at the daily Executive briefings on the coronavirus pandemic has propelled them into the limelight admit they never expected such a public role. But it is a vital one for the 6,000 deaf people in the province who rely on their expertise to inform them of the latest developments. To the uninitiated - frankly most of us - it seemed the use of both British and Irish sign language was another unnecessary duplication, but both are recognised systems which have nothing to do with Irish language.

Perhaps these women will inspire more people to learn how to sign and aid more deaf people.
