A case of dumb and dumber

The other evening I was watching the local news on TV and the current rioting about bits of coloured cloth.

Afterwards, fiddling with the remote control, I happened on a programme concerned with the movement of a giraffe from Dublin Zoo to Belfast Zoo, where I learnt that giraffes, like humans, have a strong herd instinct.

With the Dublin giraffe contentedly munching whatever giraffes munch and very comfortably ensconced with its new northern neighbours without hint of flag, faith, or - dare I say it? - culture, I wondered why we refer to them as "dumb animals".
